Our Story
Diamond P Ranch is located in eastern Iowa close to the Mississippi River. The Powell family runs the farming operation in the small town of Blue Grass, Iowa.
The land has been in the family for over 100 years. The farm had seen several years with no livestock – only being used for crop ground and the fencing and pastures had fallen into disrepair. Scott took over the operation in 2004, added Kim in 2005 and started the Diamond P Ranch that spring. The ‘big bosses’, Owen, Cody, Levi, and Reed would soon arrive.
Owen came in late 2006, Cody arrived in May of 2008, we welcomed Levi in late October 2010, and Reed rounded out our family when he came in May 2013. The boys are a constant joy and hopefully will one day continue the family farm together. A good friend reminded us recently that the days are long, but the years are short!
Today we farm nearly 1,000 acres of owned and rented ground with the homestead sitting on nearly 200 acres on the edge of town. We have a growing registered Hereford and commercial cattle herd, run a grain operation, offer hay sales, and are blessed to be doing all of this as a family. The boys keep up busy with a variety of livestock shows and sporting events. In May 2022 we learned that #4 is Type 1 Diabetic so that is another chapter in our story. The farm is a wonderful place to raise our boys and is a lifestyle that we all love!

Our Cattle
We are growing registered Hereford calves with a few crossbreds as well. We have bloodlines that include Duster, Purple Tonic, Back ‘n Time, LaGrand Reload, P606, and Feltons Legend 242. Our genetic program is evolving with the addition of cattle from several producers.
The Herefords are definitely a quieter breed than the black hides we are used to. As the boys get older and insist to help, it is nice to have quieter cattle! We are very excited to see what the future holds for the boys and the club calf shows!!! We calve in early spring and early fall and calves are fully vaccinated and kept in the feedlot for background feeding for 90 days usually.
Almost all of our cattle work is done via horseback with the help of a few close friends. If you're looking for a nice show calf please give us a call.
Recently we have supplied several folks with feeder calves to personally feed out and completely finished calves for the freezer. We work with Tipton Meat Locker for processing our beef. Calves usually go to the locker in late summer. NOTHING is as tasty as getting beef from someone you know and being able to walk to your freezer and pick what you’ll have for dinner!
We may be small, but the cattle are built right!
